Termite Inspection

What are the Signs of a Termite Infestation?

Termites, often referred to as “silent destroyers,” are notorious pests that can wreak havoc on your home if left unchecked. These small, wood-eating insects can cause extensive damage to the structural integrity of your property, leading to costly repairs. Recognizing the signs of a termite infestation early on is crucial to preventing severe damage. Continue reading to learn more from the team at CalPro Inspection Group and consider scheduling a termite inspection.

Presence of Discarded Wings

One of the most apparent signs of a termite infestation is the presence of discarded wings. After termites swarm to establish new colonies, they shed their wings. These discarded wings are often found near windowsills, door frames, or other entry points. If you notice a pile of small, translucent wings, it's likely a sign that termites have infiltrated your home.

Hollow-Sounding Wood

As termites consume wood from the inside out, they create tunnels and galleries within the infested material. If you tap on a wooden surface and it sounds hollow, there is a high chance that termites have already caused significant damage. Take note of any walls, floors, or wooden structures that appear weakened or produce an unusual sound when tapped.

Frass (Termite Droppings)

Termites excrete droppings called frass, which resemble sawdust or tiny wood-colored pellets. These droppings are often found near termite-infested areas, such as windowsills, baseboards, or inside wooden furniture. If you come across frass, it indicates an active termite infestation nearby. Be vigilant and investigate further to identify the extent of the problem.

Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites, the most common termite species, construct mud tubes as protective tunnels between their nests and food sources (wood). These tubes are typically brown and can be found along the foundation of your home, exterior walls, or crawl spaces. If you discover mud tubes, it clearly indicates an active termite infestation and immediate action is necessary.

Sagging or Bubbling Paint

Termites produce moisture as they tunnel through wood, which can cause paint to bubble or sag. It may signify termite activity beneath the surface if you notice blistering or distorted paint on your walls or wooden surfaces. Investigate the affected area and look for other signs mentioned above to confirm the presence of termites.
